hacker : HUNTER

... is a Tomorrow Unlocked original series, that recaps the most notorious cybercrime cases of the recent years. It explores stories of the people working to stop cybercrime and build a safer future.

While cybercrime is a technological process, it is created and performed by people. At the same time, police and security experts are trying to be a step ahead and stop them. hacker:HUNTER is looking at these people: the heroes stopping cybercrime, the motivations that drive cybercriminals and the question where the frontier between good and evil, between white and black is.

The first story is about Carbanak, a billion-dollar bank heist. "ATMs hold cash; that’s attractive to criminals all over the world", says James Chapell in the first episode. The four-episode mini-series explores how an international group successfully emptied ATMs all around the world. And how international police cooperation got in their way.

Cashing In: A digital bank heist in four acts

Episode 1: 'ATM Jackpotting': Episode one describes how ATMs were manipulated during the Carbanak operation and explains how security researcher Barnaby Jack first became aware of ATM vulnerabilities in 2010.

Episode 2: 'Welcome to Taiwan': The Carbanak Group attacks a bank in Taiwan and sends 22 money mules into the country. What they didn't anticipate: within a few hours the Taiwanese police publish surveillance pictures of all the money mules. The hunt begins.

Episode 3: 'Suitcases full of money': 19 money mules flee Taiwan, the rest are left in Taipei with several million dollars. The police get closer and closer.

Episode 4: 'Arrest in a holiday paradise': The Taiwanese police finds clues to the whereabouts of the head of the Carbanak group and coordinates with Europol. Can the group be stopped?

Coming up soon: The story of WannaCry

In 2017, the WannaCry epidemic swept around the globe. Malicious software that spread incredibly fast and encrypted computers, making no difference between victims. A cybersecurity researcher registered a URL which he found in the code of the program – and suddenly the epidemic stopped.

Our second mini-series will tell the story of WannaCry, the researcher who stopped it and will ask where the modern, digital frontier is between good and evil, between Blackhat and Whitehat.

Coming in October 2019.
